So off we went, against my better judgement, to the new Friday’s. As expected, perusing the menu and visually eyeing the heaping platters being delivered to tables around us, that dodging large portions and mounds of fries would be challenge numero uno. Menu creativity, one of my key healthy restaurant eating strategies in Eat Out, Eat Right, needed to be implemented. Step one: order a few (less than the number of diners at the table) interesting and healthy items and share. One of us ordered a TV Food Network inspired grilled ahi tuna burgers on ciabiatta rolls with a mixed field green salad. Two others split a rack of barbecued ribs and opted for vegetables vs. the heap of fries. To start we shared one serving of tossed green salad with, of course, dressing on the side. Whew, we did it — proof that even in America’s chain restaurants you can eat healthier meals. Several experts, including yours truly, helped Health Magazine (America’s Healthiest Restaurants, April 2008) identify the top ten chain restaurants in America that are getting on the health bandwagon.
