This article, Building Bridges Through Collaboration and Consensus: Expanding Awareness and Use of Peer Support and Peer Support Communities Among People With Diabetes, Caregivers, and Health Care Providers, is published in a special issue of Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, titled Social Media and Diabetes. It details the development of collaboration between the diabetes peer support communities and the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

In this provocative article I build the case for the need to remodel for the future the way that Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) is delivered today. I detail the societal trends driving the need for this action along with the aligned research, standards and recommendations.
