Who with Diabetes REALLY Requires Insulin?

Diasome is a corporate entity working on a novel technology that takes a new and innovative approach to insulin therapy. Their technology, still in development, would restore the liver’s natural role in the control of blood glucose in people with diabetes who require insulin. I was invited to write this guest post for Diasome’s blog on a topic of my choosing. Since Diasome’s focus is on optimizing the health of people with diabetes who take insulin, I tackled answering the question: who with diabetes really requires insulin. Reality is even though all people with type 1 diabetes take insulin, just by shear mass of the population, 3-fold more people with type 2 diabetes take insulin. Roughly 10 to 15 years after the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes about 30% of people require insulin. I conclude the blog by encouraging people with diabetes and all others involved in diabetes care to minimize their focus on the types of diabetes or therapies and maximize their focus on working together for the betterment of the whole community.
